Ardrey, Robert
African Genesis: A Personal Investigation Into The Animal Origins And Nature Of Man
Robert Ardrey’s Nature of Man
Paperback
Bantam books
Not in innocence, and not in Asia, was mankind born. So opens Robert Ardrey’s earthshaking classic African Genesis, his first professional foray into the scientific realm. In Ardrey travelled to Africa to examine the collection of the thenobscure paleontologist Raymond Dart. He saw, culled from a cave occupied by early humans, a collection of antelope jawbones perfect for sawing, and antelope forelegs perfect for clubbing. He saw the skull of a juvenile protohuman, apparently bashed in. A growing body of evidence suggested that man had evolved on the African continent from carnivorous, predatory stock, who had also, long before man, achieved the use of weapons. An acclaimed dramatist, Ardrey’s interest in the African discoveries sprang less from purely scientific grounds than from the radical new light they cast on the eternal question: Why do we behave as we do? Are we naturally inclined towards war and weapons? From to , Ardrey commuted between the museums and libraries and laboratories of the North, and the games reserves and fossil beds of Africa trying to answer that question. The result was African Genesis. In a sweeping work that encompasses the evolutionary roots of nationalism and patriotism, private property and social order, hierarchy and statusseeking, and even conscience, Ardrey tells a story of man never before heard, and redefines what exactly it means to be human.

In The Body Project , historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg answers this question, drawing on diary excerpts and media images from to the present. Tracing girls’ attitudes toward topics ranging from breast size and menstruation to hair, clothing, and cosmetics, she exposes the shift from the Victorian concern with inner beauty to our modern focus on outward appearancein particular, the desire to be modelthin and sexy. Compassionate, insightful, and gracefully written, The Body Project explores the gains and losses adolescent girls have inherited since they shed the corset and the ideal of virginity for a new world of sexual freedom and consumerisma world in which the body is their primary project. “Joan Brumberg’s book offers us an insightful and entertaining history behind the destructive mantra of the ‘ s’I hate my body!'” Katie Couric

Fiction Thrillers Suspense
“From Mary Higgins Clark, America’s bestselling “Queen of Suspense,” comes a dark and chilling story of murder, and its effects years later on the man convicted of the crime and the woman who helped convict him. It is a novel that takes the reader to the heights of suspense while exploring the depths of the criminal mind.” * Ellie Cavanaugh was only seven years old when her fifteenyearold sister, Andrea, was murdered near their home in OldhamontheHudson, a rural village in New York’s Westchester County. There were three suspects: Rob Westerfield, nineteenyearold scion of a wealthy, prominent family, whom Andrea has been secretly dating; Paul Stroebel, a sixteenyearold schoolmate, who had a crush on Andrea; and Will Nebels, a local handyman in his forties. It was Ellie who had led her parents to a hideout in which Andrea’s body was found a secret hideaway in which she met her friends. And it was Ellie who was blamed by her parents for her sister’s death for not telling them about this place the night Andrea was missing. It was also Ellie’s testimony that led to the conviction of the man she was firmly convinced was the killer. Steadfastly denying his guilt, he spent the next twentytwo years in prison. When he comes up for parole, Ellie, now an investigative reporter for an Atlanta newspaper, protests his release. Nonetheless, the convicted killer is set free and returns to Oldham. Determined to thwart his attempts to whitewash his reputation, Ellie also returns to Oldham, intent on creating a Website and writing a book that will conclusively prove his guilt. As she delves deeper into her research, however, she uncovers horrifying and heretofore unknownfacts that shed new light on her sister’s murder. With each discovery, she comes closer to a confrontation with a desperate killer. Gripping and relentlessly compelling, “Daddy’s Little Girl,” a portrayal of a family shattered by crime, reflects Mary Higgins Clark’s uncanny insight into the twisted mind of a killer and is further evidence of why she is America’s favorite author of suspense.

Fiction Sagas
In The “Vineyard, New York Times” bestselling author Barbara Delinsky ” Lake News, Coast Road, Three Wishes ” has written her most complex and emotionally rewarding novel: a story of two women, a generation apart, each of whose dream becomes bound with the other’s. To her family, Natalie Seebring is a woman who prizes appearances. She is exquisitely mannered, socially adept, a supportive wife, and head of a successful wineproducing enterprise. So when she announces plans to marry a vineyard employee mere months after the death of her husband of fiftyeight years, her son and daughter are stunned. Faced with their disapproval, Natalie decides to write a memoir. There is much that her children don’t know about her life about her love of the vineyard, her role in fighting to build it up, and the sacrifices she made for her family. Olivia Jones is a dreamer, living vicariously through the old photographs she restores. She and her daughter, Tess, have no one but themselves, so they cling to the fantasy that a big, happy family is out there somewhere, just waiting to welcome them home. When Olivia is hired by Natalie to help with her memoir, a summer at Natalie’s beautiful vineyard by the sea seems the perfect opportunity to live out that fantasy an elegant home by the shore, a salary that allows her to hire a tutor for her dyslexic daughter, a job that is creative, hours spent with a woman who has led a charmed life. But all is not as it seems, Olivia and Tess discover when they arrive at Asquonset, the vineyard in Rhode Island. While welcoming, Natalie is not quite the mothering type, as is quickly evident in the hostility her daughter and son have toward her it’sa hostility that Olivia must buffer. Another dose of stark reality comes in the form of Simon Burke, who runs the vineyard’s daytoday operation and sees in Olivia and Tess an unwelcome reminder of the wife and daughter he tragically lost. And then there is the cruel reality of Olivia’s own life the mother who never wanted her, and a career that has floundered. Natalie’s story, intended for her own children, enlightens Olivia as well. The lives of these two women of different generations, parallel in so many ways, become, in “The Vineyard,” a powerful and moving story as the fantasy of an idealized life, complete with perfect romance, crashes headlong into reality.

Now, six years later, a car accident has left Rachel clinging to life, and she and their two daughters desperately need him. Putting work on hold for the first time in his life, Jack decides to sit by his exwife’s bedside. As he meets Rachel’s many new friends, and tries to cope with two teenage daughters and their problems, he learns more about a woman he never really knew, her expressive art, and the secret that made her leave. Much to his astonishment, Jack begins to see Rachel, his daughters, and the story of his marriage with new eyes.

Blake Sisters
Hardcover
Simon & Schuster
Fiction Literary
With this powerful story, Barbara Delinsky, the bestselling and acclaimed author of I Coast Road I and I Three Wishes, I has written her richest and most exciting novel yet. At its center is Lily Blake, a talented singer who shuns the limelight and cherishes her privacy. Tricked by a devious reporter into unwittingly giving an interview about her friendship with a distinguished churchman a newly appointed Cardinal she finds herself accused of having had an affair with him. Shocked and dismayed, Lily becomes a pariah and suffers the brutal, ultimate violation of her privacy as headlines all across the country proclaim her guilt. Hounded by the press, fired from her job, deprived of all public freedom, Lily has no choice but to flee. She returns in secret to her hometown of Lake Henry, in a remote, beautiful part of New Hampshire. But, idyllic as it may look, Lake Henry, too, has its secrets. Some were the cause of her leaving home in the first place, so returning to her birthplace and her family is not without its own stress and pain. Driven by the need to exact justice and, for herself, some kind of closure from the media that changed her life forever, Lily forms an uneasy alliance with John Kipling, a journalist who was born and raised in Lake Henry’s poorest neighborhood. His successful career as a bigcity reporter has ended disastrously, and John has come back home to edit the local newspaper, I Lake News. I At first he sees Lily as a victim, as well as a subject for the book he hopes to write. But soon she becomes someone whose appeal and cause he cannot deny, even at the risk of taking on his former colleagues in her defense. Set against the physical beauty of New Hampshire and against the complex web of family life and relationships in a small town, I Lake News I moves triumphantly toward a surprising and deeply satisfying conclusion. Barbara Delinsky’s bestselling I Three Wishes I was praised by I Publishers Weekly I for its “spare, controlled, and poignant prose that evokes the simplicity and joys of smalltown life.” Those same qualities are abundant in I Lake News, I which offers an intimate look at the complex relationship between an enigmatic man and a vulnerable, besieged woman, both struggling to find a new sense of community in a strange place they once called home.

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: By James Joyce Illustrated, A
Paperback
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the first novel of Irish writer James Joyce. A K¼nstlerroman in a modernist style, it traces the religious and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter ego of Joyce and an allusion to Daedalus, the consummate craftsman of Greek mythology. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his selfexile from Ireland to Europe. The work uses techniques that Joyce developed more fully in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake . A Portrait began life in as Stephen Hero ”a projected chapter autobiographical novel in a realistic style. After chapters, Joyce abandoned Stephen Hero in and set to reworking its themes and protagonist into a condensed fivechapter novel, dispensing with strict realism and making extensive use of free indirect speech that allows the reader to peer into Stephen’s developing consciousness. American modernist poet Ezra Pound had the novel serialised in the English literary magazine The Egoist in and , and published as a book in by B. W. Huebsch of New York. The publication of A Portrait and the short story collection Dubliners earned Joyce a place at the forefront of literary modernism. In , the Modern Library named the novel third on its list of the best Englishlanguage novels of the th century.

Unforgettable for character and incident, it is a novel of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man.

The sensational killings that have rocked San Francisco appear to be unrelated except in their brutality. But detective Lindsay Boxer senses there’s some thread connecting them all. She calls her friends in the Women’s Murder Club together to see if they can discover what it is. Surely some clue has been overlooked by their bosses and male colleagues. Working with Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas, Assistant District Attorney Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay discovers that there is indeed a link. The victims were of different ages, lived in different locations, and were killed with different weapons. But each had a close relative in a particular profession, a profession that sends a chill through Lindsay’s heart. The partners in the Women’s Murder Club realize that this killer is after something unspeakable, something deeper than revenge, and that the next target could be one of them. They deduce where the killer is likely to strike next and bait a trap that can’t be resisted. But if their calculation is wrong, the consequences will be lethal. And there will be no second chance. p

Who can guess what a woman will do when the unthinkable becomes her reality? Until now, Kathryn Lyons’s life has been peaceful if unextraordinary: a satisfying job teaching high school in the New England mill town of her childhood; a pictureperfect home by the ocean; a precocious, independentminded fifteenyearold daughter; and a happy marriage whose occasional dull passages she attributes to the unavoidable deadening effect of time. As a pilot’s wife, Kathryn has learned to expect both intense exhilaration and long periods alone ”but nothing has prepared her for the latenight knock that lets her know her husband has died in a crash. As Kathryn struggles with her grief, she descends into a maelstrom of publicity stirred up by the modern hunger for the details of tragedy. Even before the plane is located in waters off the Irish coast, the relentless focus on her husband’s life begins to bring a bizarre personal mystery into focus. Could there be any truth to the increasingly disturbing rumors that he had a secret? Fighting the impulse to protect herself and her daughter from the details of the crash and the mystery surrounding it, Kathryn sets out to learn who her husband really was ”whatever that knowledge may cost. We have tried to make this book lively and practical, minimizing the lists of labels, levels, and categories that are likely to be forgotten before the final exam is graded. Instead, we emphasize basic research findings and the ways they apply to children, parents, and the adults who work with both. The book is organized chronologically, from conception, heredity, birth, and infancy, through early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. For each stage, physical and cognitive development and social and emotional development are discussed in separate chapters, but always, we point to the interplay between these topics.

Boy Hits Car at Herman’s Hideaway, Denver, CO 081814

I think we have a new annual tradition…Boy Hits Car at Herman’s Hideaway! It was another fantastic show, and I think the new songs share plenty of that energy from when the band was just getting their start a few years ago. Keep it up, boys, and I can’t wait to work with you again in Denver!

Don’t forget about my personal favorite: As I Watched The Sun Fuck The Ocean.

What can I shoot for you?

XFactor1 and Boy Hits Car at Herman’s Hideaway, Denver, Colorado 050913 by Jason Claypool

It has been so long since I discovered Boy Hits Car, and have waited and waited and waited for a tour and a Denver date. Well, my wish finally came true, and they came to town on the Taproot tour, and just tore up the Denver crowd at Herman’s Hideaway on 050913.

I emailed the band, and they were gracious enough to hook me up with a +1 after I told them I have waited so long to see them, and they seemed truly excited to have a Denver photographer catch this set. I promised I would do my best!

I have rarely seen such a polished band, with so much energy, and this ranks up there in my top 5 or 10 perfect shows! It was like a light switch; one minute, they were setting up and tuning the acoustic, and the next they were tearing into The Rebirth and then straight into As I Watched The Sun Fuck The Ocean. Then they didn’t let up for a solid hour, making sure they made their mark on Denver, even mentioning that the last time they played here was in ’93 at the Lion’s Lair. Crap, can you imagine trying to contain all this energy in that hole in the wall?

Embarrassingly, this was my first time to catch a show at Herman’s, but I am glad my friend Sean and I were there early to catch both XFactor1 and Lost Point, too, and to get a feel for the club and the lighting. Now I just need to catch Lost Point here in town, and do their shoot some justice. 24 Gigs was just enough for a few shots of XFactor1, and hundreds of Boy Hits Car. Don’t worry, Lost Point, I’m hooked. You’ll get your chance! I only own so many memory cards!

By the way, Brandon of 54 Peaks Photography, great to meet you, and let’s shoot together again!

What can I shoot for you?

Be sure to check out “more…” below, to see all the great shots from a fantastic night, and to see which shots would look great on your walls!
